Vladivostok is among the ten most up and coming cities of the world, as determined by the special UNESCO Commission. Of all the European-style cities it is the closest to the Asian Pacific region.
The city is located on a range of hills, which on one side borders the Pacific Ocean and the other forests. The beautiful and varied landscape in and around the city provides many opportunities for interesting sightseeing. Vladivostok is located not far from the Chinese border and is also within easy reach of Korea and Japan. Its proximity to other Asian cultures is reflected in its own very diverse culture. When you are not studying there is so much to see and do in terms of experiencing the city, its culture, history and beautiful surrounds.
History
Vladivostok was first built in 1860 when Russia expanded eastwards over and beyond the River Amur. At this time Russia made its claim to the Russian Far East. Vladivostok became Russia´s most important city in the East; the Russian Pacific fleet was based there as were large fishing fleets. The Trans-Siberian railway was built to connect Asian and European Russia. The final stop on the line, or the first if you are traveling westwards, is in Vladivostok. The city´s strategic location and port have in short led to Vladivostok being a vital hub in North East Asia.
Between 1958 and 1991 - during the Cold War - Vladivostok was a closed city. Only Soviet citizens were able to live in and visit the city. Most of Vladivostok´s inhabitants were actually prevented from traveling. Today, however, Vladivostok is an open, friendly and attractive city to visit.
