It is enough to look out over the rivers Volga and Oka to appreciate the city´s fantastic position.
There are many sides to Nizhny Novgorod namely the lush university area along the Volga, the old town and Kremlin enclosed within the old city walls dating from the 1500s, the modern centre with its shopping centre and boutiques and the industrial area to the west.
History
The Russian chronicles say that Nizhny Novgorod was founded by Prince Yuri in 1221. The excellent location of the town, on the confluence of two great rivers (the Volga and the Oka), predetermined the main roles of the new town: to protect against invaders and to become a centre of trade. Known as Gorky in the period 1932 to 1990, the city has now reverted to its pre-revolutionary name Nizhny Novgorod.
Getting around
Nizhny Novgorod is served by a system of trams, trolleybuses and buses, the tickets sold from booths at major stops. The one-line metro runs south from the train station.
